The future of EMGS rest in the hands of our early career investigators, who will define the directions we take and galvanize the next generation of our membership base. Early Career Investigators who have recently transitioned to independence, and who are committed to developing their roles as leaders within the EMGS, are invited to apply for the Emerging Leaders Development Award (ELDA). Recipients of this award receive a commitment to cover their costs to attend up to three Annual Meetings over a five-year period. In exchange, recipients must maintain active and engaged membership in EMGS.
This year's Emerging Leaders Development Award recipient is Dr. Bambarendage Pinithi Upekka Perera. Dr. Perera is an accomplished epigeneticist at the University of Michigan, engaging in dynamic, interdisciplinary research that bridges molecular biology, toxicology, and epigenetics. She has contributed twenty-two publications to this field. Dr. Perera's research explores non-coding RNA (ncRNA) and other epigenetic factors as biomarkers for environmental exposures, focusing on pregnancy and maternal-fetal interaction.
Dr. Perera has also served as a faculty advisor and mentor for graduate students and trainees in her role at the University of Michigan, and as a research faculty member, she has acted as an instructor of record for the Environmental Health Sciences Professional Development Course (p1-p2).
