MEET THE 2025 ALEXANDER HOLLAENDER AWARD WINNER

Carole Yauk, PhD
University of Ottawa

Dr. Yauk received her PhD in Biology from McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada, in 1998. She has over 25 years of experience in applied genetic toxicology building a stellar career and research program integrating basic and applied sciences with the ultimate goal of promoting the translation of genomic innovations into regulatory applications that catalyze the transformation of human health risk assessment. Dr. Yauk has made outstanding contributions to three main areas of applied genetic toxicology that are briefly summarized below.

NEW EDITOR-IN-CHIEF FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND MOLECULAR MUTAGENESIS

The EMGS is pleased to announce that Dr. Robert W. Sobol has been appointed the new Editor-in-Chief for Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis.

This September, congratulate our new Editor-in-Chief in-person at the 56th Annual Meeting of the EMGS in Rochester, New York!

“I understand that the EMM Editor-in-Chief (EIC) will have the opportunity to shape the future of EMM, to help influence the journal’s direction, uphold and enhance the journal’s high scientific standards, and ensure it continues to serve as a platform for groundbreaking research in mutagenesis, genomics, and related fields. I look forward to that challenge”.

- Robert W. Sobol, PhD

Comparative Analysis of TA102 and WP2 uvrA(pKM101)
Strains in Detecting Nitrosamine Mutagens in the
Enhanced Ames Test

Shukla R., Valani D., Kajavadara C., Patel S., Patel R., Bhatt L., Sundar R., Jain M.

The Ames test is a fundamental assay for evaluating chemical mutagenicity, particularly for nitrosamines, which are widespread environmental and pharmaceutical contaminants. To improve sensitivity, regulatory agencies have endorsed the enhanced Ames test (EAT), which incorporates five tester strains, a 30-min pre-incubation step, and metabolic activation using both rat
and hamster liver S9 fractions. . While Salmonella typhimurium TA102 is known for its sensitivity to oxidative mutagens, its performance under EAT conditions has not been fully characterized. This study evaluated the mutagenic response of TA102 using two nitrosamine positive controls: N nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and 1-cyclopentyl- 4-nitrosopiperazine(CPNP). E. coli WP2
uvrA(pKM101) showed consistent mutagenic responses to both NDMA and CPNP, consistent with existing EAT data. TA102 demonstrated a robust response to NDMA but not to CPNP, suggesting limited sensitivity to certain nitrosamines. These findings support the continued use of WP2 uvrA(pKM101) in EAT protocols and highlight the limited utility of TA102 for comprehensive nitrosamine mutagenicity assessment.

2025 EMGS MENTORSHIP MATCHING PROGRAM

Deadline: October 4, 2025, 11:59 PM EST

The 2025 Mentor/Mentee Matchmaking program is underway! This program is designed for EMGS members to get involved in mentorship!

All members, at any career stage, are welcome to join as a mentor, mentee, or both!

If you would like mentorship in anything, from career advice to work/life balance, the mentor/mentee matchmaking program will help find the right mentor for you! Fill out the Mentee Survey to find the right mentor for you!

MENTEE SURVEY

Looking to become a mentor? Fill out the Mentor Survey to be matched with the right mentee based on your topics of interest!

MENTOR SURVEY

Most survey questions are optional, so please indicate only the information you’d like to provide. Based on responses, we will match each prospective mentee to 3-5 possible mentors (depending on the volume of responses) based on alignment in survey responses. It will then be up to mentees to follow up with the mentor of their choice.

We will begin returning match results in October!

Please direct questions to Jenny Kay (kay@silentspring.org).

EMGS CAREER CENTER

SCIENTIST SPOTLIGHT

David DeMarini

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, RTP, NC (Retired)

Dr. DeMarini was born in Peoria, IL, and while in high school, I placed second in comedy reading at the state forensics competition, which was held in 1966 at Illinois State University in Normal, IL, just a 40-min drive from Peoria. Because of that experience, I applied only to ISU for college, and although I thought of majoring in theater, my mother, Kathleen, who was a nurse, wisely advised me to major in biology instead.

EMGS MEMBERSHIP REFERRAL PROGRAM

EMGS members have access to a unique code to share with colleagues who have not previously joined EMGS as regular members (previous trainee members are exempted). There is no limit on how many times the code can be shared to recruit new members.

This program will offer a 25% discount to the new member who uses this code for their first year. If this new member renews their membership the following year, the original EMGS member who recruited them and whose code was used will then receive a 25% discount on their membership for that year.

The 25% discount to the current member will occur only once per year. However, if a member gets 10 or more new members to renew, they will receive a 50% reduction off their membership!
