Alexander Hollaender International Outreach Committee

Programs of Previous Courses

Mission Statement

The principal mission of the Alexander Hollaender International Outreach Committee (HIOC) is to broaden the opportunities in mutagenesis research and translational applications in this field for scientists and students from countries where such opportunities have been historically underrepresented, through the planning, promoting, and teaching courses in relevant subjects. The primary geographical focus of this outreach is on Central and South America.

Committee Membership

Interested EMGS members are invited to consider joining the Hollaender Outreach Committee and are welcome to visit our annual committee meeting. We will strive to maintain an equitable distribution of the committee members over the three pillars of the EMS. We do not envisage establishing a maximum size for the committee at this time but anticipate that membership will be at least 15 and not usually more than 20. The larger-than-most members in this committee stems in part from our attempt to include representatives from the other countries in the Americas.

Committee members are normally expected to serve for three years, with about one-third of the members being replaced each year. The committee is large enough that the loss of an individual member will not require an immediate replacement. However, the committee will include discussion of recruitment of new members as a business item at each annual meeting.

Committee Leadership

The chair is selected by the EMGS president. The co-chair is selected by the president in consultation with the chair. They each serve for two years with possible renewal. The intent is for the co-chair to succeed the chair, and to maintain continuity the chair will normally remain on the committee for an additional year as past chair. If for any reason the co-chair is unable to rotate into the position of chair, upon advice from the complete committee, the EMGS president will appoint a new chair from members with experience on the committee.

The annual meeting will be conducted by the chair, or in his/her absence, by the co-chair. The chair and co-chair together and possibly a designated committee member will prepare the summary of the business of the meeting, and the chair will make verbal reports to the EMGS membership at the annual business meeting of the Society, if requested. The chair will conduct regular communication with the EB regarding committee activities and will ensure that the website is up to date.

Committee Roles and Responsibilities
  • To develop recommendations for support of educational and scientific activities related to environmental mutagenesis in countries which can benefit significantly from such, including the following types of activities:
  1. Travel support for students and senior scientists from these countries to attend scientific meetings of the EMGS.
  2. Support for scientists for travel to North America for laboratory training.
  3. Arranging subscriptions of the Society Journal for individuals and/or institutions in these countries. (Assess the benefits of this program.)
  4. Sponsorship or assistance with international training courses, workshops, or scientific meetings. Propose activities that could be supported under this program and develop criteria and a mechanism for allocating funds to programs worthy of support.
  5. In conjunction with the Awards and Honors Committee, provide recognition to senior scientists who have made significant contributions in the field of environmental mutagenesis in their country and in the surrounding region.
  • Suggest ways in which the Committee sponsored activities can help to increase awareness of the broader goals of the EMGS
  • Address the needs of interested scientists in countries in which low budgets or the inability to obtain US dollars preclude them from joining the EMGS. Procedures are needed to identify such individuals. Describe ways by which the Society or its members can help with dues and journal subscriptions.

    1. Develop and maintain a list of individuals and institutions that would benefit from EMGS membership and Journal subscriptions. The Committee needs to re-evaluate the list of scientists currently receiving the journal. The original commitment was for 5 years. Any scientists that have been receiving the journal for more than 5 years should be removed from the list, unless justification is presented for the continued receipt of the journal. Working with EMGS Business Office and Wiley Liss, the numbers should be confirmed and the list updated.
    2. Develop ways to select the most suitable candidates and to provide for their needs in the most economical way (e.g., using overrun journal sets at the end of a year) to help the maximum number of people. Consideration will have to be given to fair ways to rotate recipients if the number of people should exceed the available resources.
    3. Make recommendations to benefit foreign members and ways in which costs for such activities may be defrayed.
    4. Publicize and facilitate opportunities for EMGS place members to sponsor members in these countries
  • Help to provide support of Hollaender Courses based upon approved proposals. Develop guidelines for Hollaender Course application, review and selection of applicants for proposals. Proposals must then be prepared according to the agreed upon guidelines, reviewed by the Committee and sent to the Executive Board for approval. Establish criteria for selection of the Alexander Hollaender Trainee Fellows and submit these to Council and Executive Board for approval.
