Outreach and Support Subcommittee
Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Outreach & Support (O&S) Subcommittee to support all current and new members of the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society (EMGS), including scientists from all professional and educational paths, and to ensure a welcoming environment within the society. The O&S Subcommittee is part of the Membership and Professional Development Committee of the EMGS. The EMGS is a global scientific community with a broad range of voices; all should feel welcome and be encouraged to participate in all EMGS activities and leadership opportunities. The O&S Subcommittee seeks to cultivate an environment of respect within EMGS that encourages professional growth for all members and supports society growth.

Subcommittee Membership

Any EMGS member may join the O&S Subcommittee. Members of the Subcommittee have opportunities to serve in a leadership role, decide on leadership, and help to define the direction and activities of the Subcommittee. EMGS members may join or leave the Subcommittee at any time, though it is requested that the Subcommittee leader be informed of any changes to membership. Membership is free of charge.

Subcommittee Leadership

Leadership roles for the Subcommittee include a Chair, Co-Chair, and a Council Liaison. To ensure continuity of leadership for the O&S Subcommittee, Chair and Co-Chair will serve terms with an upper limit of 3 consecutive years (counting years as Chair and Co-Chair). EMGS members in good standing that are current members of the O&S Subcommittee may be nominated or self-nominated to serve as Chair or Co-Chair.

Leadership transitions will occur either at the end of a 3-year term or when a leader requests to step down prior to 3 years. Ideally, terms of the Chair and Co-Chair will start on different years, such that when a Chair’s term is ending, the Co-Chair can move to the Chair position. At that point in time, current leadership will solicit nominations for the Co-Chair position. Nominations will have a deadline of July 30th. At the in-person committee meeting during the EMGS Annual Meeting (typically held in September), the new nominee will assume the Co-Chair position. If more than one nomination is received, elections will be conducted at the O&S Subcommittee meeting at the Annual Meeting, and the new Co-Chair will start immediately afterwards. The entire committee will have a chance to voice ideas or concerns about the leadership transition and discuss directions of the committee for the coming year with the new Chair/Co-Chair.

The Council Liaison is selected by the EMGS Executive Board. This Councilor will serve for 3 years and report back on plans, budget requests, initiatives, etc. of the O&S Subcommittee to the Council and to the Board at least annually at Council meetings or on an as-needed basis.

Subcommittee Roles and Responsibilities

The O&S Subcommittee will carry out planned activities to develop and implement membership initiatives that support society growth. The committee will meet in person at the EMGS Annual Meeting. The committee will also hold 2 or more annual teleconferences to share updates, assign tasks, and develop initiatives. Notes will be taken at meetings and shared with the group through the membership email list. The committee will use group emails as necessary to plan activities and tasks.
