Publication Policy Committee
Mission Statement

The mission of the Publication Policy Committee (PPC) is to provide advice and oversight to the Editor-in Chief and Associate Editors, and to advise the EMGS Executive Board on publication policy issues related to the Society’s Journal, Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis (EMM).

Committee Membership

The PPC comprises a Chair, co-Chair, and past Editors-in-Chief of the Journal, as well as members at large from the Society. It is important that committee members (a) possess dedication to the EMGS and its Journal, EMM, (b) possess significant knowledge on publication policy issues or the desire to gain such knowledge, and (c) have the ability to work well with the EMM Editors and the EMGS Executive Board. The current Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors are ex officio members and are included in communications and meetings of the committee as appropriate. As necessary, the PPC chair will suggest new committee members to the EMGS President after consultation with the PPC.

Because of the unique expertise possessed by past EMM Editors-in-Chief, they are encouraged to serve on the PPC. It is important that new committee members join the PPC routinely as a positive complement to the long-term members. A renewable term of service of three years is deemed reasonable.

Committee Leadership

PPC co-Chairs serve for four-year staggered terms, the first two as co-Chair and the second two as Chair. The incoming co-Chair is recommended by the PPC chair to the EMGS President after consultation with the PPC. A vacant position for the Chair or co-Chair will be filled by the PPC recommending a replacement to the EMGS President. The replacement term can be a full term or the completion of the open term.

The PPC Chair ensures the smooth completion of committee business. The PPC Chair should include the co-Chair on all communications and transfer all important files to the incoming Chair.

The PPC Chair is responsible for providing up-to-date information about the Committee to the Council and those responsible for maintaining the EMGS Website.

Committee Roles and Responsibilities
  • Perform ongoing appraisals of the Journal, including its scientific quality, coverage of the field, and manuscript processing turn-around time.
  • Aid and advise the Editor-in-Chief and the Journal’s Editorial Board in soliciting papers of high scientific quality for the Journal and in extending our 3 scientific outreach for potential contributors of appropriate subject matter manuscripts to the Journal.
  • Evaluate the Journal’s growth and compare it with similar publications.
  • Consider all EMGS matters pertaining to the Journal. EMGS supports an autonomous Journal and Editor-in-Chief.
