ESNIA SEEKING EVENT VOLUNTEERS

The Education, Student & New Investigator Affairs Subcommittee is looking for volunteers to present in their upcoming CV/resume building WoW, to act as topic leaders at the 2024 SECI luncheon, and to serve as judges for the SECI presentations at the 2024 EMGS annual meeting.

  • CV/Resume Building WoW: We are looking for members, especially those in industry and government, to lend their expertise to this event as presenters. We would ask WoW presenters to prepare a 15-minute presentation on how to tailor resume/CV to their field.
  • ESNIA SECI Luncheon: The ESNIA luncheon at the 2024 annual meeting will cover resume/CV-building tips specific to our three pillars (academia, government, and industry) following up on the CV/Resume Building WoW. We are looking for volunteers for this event to serve as leaders at our different topic tables, guide SECI on crafting a great resume/CV, and answer questions about careers in their field.
  • SECI Presentations at the EMGS Annual Meeting: We are seeking judges for the student and early career investigator presentations at the EMGS annual meeting. We generally ask each judge to visit 2-3 presentations which may be either posters or platform presentations. We try to pair judges with presentations by topic of expertise or SIG, but judges may be asked to judge outside of their area of expertise depending on availability.

Please click the link below for more details and fill out the survey to indicate your interest in helping with any of these events!

2024 SAMUEL H. WILSON AWARD
FOR STUDIES ON DNA REPAIR

The Samuel H. Wilson Award for Studies on DNA Repair was created in honor of Samuel H. Wilson to provide career advancement opportunities for the next generation of environmental health scientists. We had a fantastic group of contenders for this year’s award from institutes and universities all over the US and Canada. The candidates were evaluated based on their teaching experience, their commitment to mentorship and with regard to their recent scientific accomplishments.

By unanimous vote of the six member committee, we have a clear winner for the
2024 Samuel H. Wilson Award for Studies on DNA Repair
Aishwarya Prakash, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of South Alabama

Sam was a leader in our field and made substantial contributions to the field of base excision repair (BER). Importantly, he was not only an outstanding scientist, but also a dedicated mentor, and many of his trainees became significant players in the field of DNA repair, studying the impact of DNA repair pathways on environmental health. Each awardee is chosen annually from among applications submitted by Investigators within 10 years of starting an independent position. The awardee will be invited to give an oral presentation in a Symposium or Platform session during the annual meeting and will be awarded a travel stipend, two days hotel and registration for the meeting.

Thanks to all of EMGS for the help in creating this award to honor one of our field’s past leaders and in helping to create a group of future leaders.

Environmental Molecular Mutagenesis NAM Special Issue

Topic: New Approach Methodologies in Genetic Toxicology

Guest Editors:
Daniel J Roberts, Toxys, Inc (d.roberts@toxys.com)
Steven M Bryce, Litron Laboratories (sbryce@litronlabs.com)

Our journal, Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis, is pleased to announce an upcoming special issue on New Approach Methods in Genetic Toxicology (NAMs). We are currently soliciting manuscripts to be included in this issue! The objectives of this special issue are multifaceted, but can be divided into 3 main areas of focus:

  • Introduce the concept of NAMs with regulatory emphasis (i.e., the OECDs IATA, CEPA 1999, the EPA NAM work plan, the FDA Modernization Act 2.0, etc.)
  • Highlight current NAMs that are applicable to the genetox field by way of case studies and within the context of deriving health-based guidance values.
  • Shed light on how different industries are presently using NAMs for hazard identification and risk assessment.
Click the link below for more information and examples of papers we would welcome. If you are interested in contributing a manuscript, please reach out to our guest editors!
