EMGS SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP EXPANSION

The EMGS is excited to announce that the In Vivo Mutagenesis SIG has been expanded to encompass further aspects of mutagenesis in the Mutagenic Mechanisms and Assessment Special Interest Group This SIG will focus on mutagenic mechanisms and the development, validation and application of methods to assess mutagenicity, including in laboratory animals, cell lines, and humans.  A new Co-Chair will soon be appointed with expertise in mutagenic mechanisms for this SIG.

Additionally, the DNA Repair & Mutagenic Mechanisms SIG has been renamed the DNA Repair Special Interest Group.

These changes have been made to increase opportunities for symposium or platform submissions focused on mutagenesis outside of DNA repair, as well as to increase interactions between basic and applied scientist members working in the area of mutagenesis!

EMGS members are welcomed to join as many SIGs as they would like! If you were a member of either of the previous SIGs, we especially encourage you to join both of these new groups!

HOW TO JOIN A SIG

You can join the SIG Groups as a feature under your member profile. In the search bar, type the name of the SIG you would like to join and click Search. In the bottom left corner of the SIG's group box, click + Join Group.

SCIENTIFIC LIAISON COALITION ACTIVITIES

We are excited to share with you some important information about the Scientific Liaison Coalition (SLC) and its activities. The SLC is a coalition of 13 scientific societies with a shared interested in toxicology and public health, including the Society of Toxicology, EuroTox, Internal Union of Toxicology, American Industrial Hygiene Association, the Society for Birth Defects Research & Prevention, Developmental Neurotoxicology Society, and others. (SLC Member Organizations)

As a founding member of the SLC, EMGS plays a crucial role in this collaborative effort to advance environmental health sciences.

The SLC is an organization that brings together various scientific societies to promote and strengthen partnerships in environmental health. Recently, we are collaborating with SLC to re-launch the EMGS-ACC Bioinformatics Challenge. The challenge is set to be announced in April, with the final round competition tentatively scheduled for the week before the EMGS virtual meeting next year. The SLC also maintains a calendar of relevant scientific meetings. One notable upcoming event is the ToxForum 2025 Winter Meeting in Raleigh, NC, scheduled for February 11, 2025. Additionally, the SLC regularly organizes joint meetings and facilitates shared activities among member societies.

G4 DNA structures and “second hit” mutagenesis

Most tumor suppressor genes follow a second hit inactivation pathway, where a pathogenic allele is inherited but a phenotype, or tumor risk, is not realized until a mutational event in a somatic cell disrupts the remaining normal copy, causing biallelic inactivation of the gene in that cell.
